The Pet Blogger Challenge 2018

For those who may be visiting your blog for the first time, how long have you been blogging and what is your main topic?

If you're visiting for the first time: hello and welcome! I have been blogging for almost eight years now. I blog about life on my family farm, mainly about my dogs, my pony and my flock of pet sheep. I don't write a lot, this is a photography blog.

What was your proudest blogging moment of 2017?

I don't really have one? I'm just pleased that I kept going, considering how bad the weather was last year. Beautiful sunrises/sunsets are a huge motivation for me to go out with the camera and those just... didn't really happen last year? It was always so cloudy or downright raining.

Which of your blog posts was your favorite this year and why? (Please include a link.)

Without a doubt, The Audience. It's the story of a lamb's first moments after being born, with a host of characters watching on. It's cute and funny. It didn't get much attention when I first posted it, but if anyone's having a bad day I point them in its direction.

In terms of your blog, how do you measure success?

I consider this blog a success when I go to look something up and it's there. Such as if I was wondering what Pip's first day here was like, I can go and look it up. Social media has changed so much since I started - in this blog's heyday, back in 2010/11, I would get five to ten comments on every post, but now the average is just one or two. I always enjoy reading them, though!

In what ways has your blog changed during 2017?

The biggest change has been the title. I finally went for it and dropped "The Dogs of" from The Dogs of Greenhill Farm. My blog is more about the sheep than the dogs these days, and so the title had become outdated. I'm glad I did it because it was bothering me a bit. As well as that I finally made a Facebook page for my blog, and rather than having my sidebar full of photos, I made an About Us page.

What was the biggest blogging challenge you overcame in 2017, and what did you learn that could help other bloggers?

I have another blog on a different platform that has really taken off in the last six months so making time for this one became much more difficult. At the start of 2017 I was making a post every other day, but now I just make one when I have the time. It's okay to take things more slowly and not to panic!

When things get hard, what keeps you blogging?

I'm very proud of this blog and how long I've been doing it, so that motivates me to keep going. I'm not afraid to take a small break if inspiration is escaping me.

Looking forward to 2018, what are you hoping to accomplish on your blog?

I'm quite happy with the blog right now. I don't have any big plans in the works, just to enjoy myself and my time with my animals.

In addition to what you’d like to accomplish, is here one specific skill you’d like to improve or master this year?

I would love to learn a bit of HTML so I could modify my theme if I so chose, but it's very complicated and I'm not sure where to begin!

Now it’s your turn! You have the attention of the pet blogging community – is there a question you’d like answered, or an aspect of your blog that you’d like input on? Share it here, and we’ll answer you in the comments!

I have a new blog theme for 2018 - how does it look?

  1. Your photos are lovely. And your theme complements them nicely. It's a pretty place to visit your farm.

  3. I have always been a HUGE fan of your blog and photography. I don't think you get the attention you deserve - seriously your blog is amazing and takes readers to another world. I'm glad your other blog is taking off. Let me know the address so I can check it out!

  4. Your blog theme is nice and clean. I like minimal (even though it may not reflect in my blog). A good place to learn about HTML (and CSS) is W3Schools.com. They have lots of great easy to follow tutorials that are in a step-by-step fashion. All the best to you in 2018!

  5. I love the changes that you've made, especially the About Us page and how you have the link to where the pups first appeared on the blog! I also love the shift in focus to the other animals as well. I never knew sheep had such different personalities and I love reading about them!

  6. Your photos are beautiful. I love taking sunrise/sunset photos myself, but we have too many wires around me and trying to get a photo without the wires in it is SO frustrating!

I took an HTML class in college, but it's been so long, I'd need a refresher course. :-)

  7. Thanks so much for participating in the Challenge, and your blog looks fantastic! When I'm trying to learn something complicated that's going to take time and requires structure, I look for a course on Lynda. com. You do have to pay for their courses, but they're very good and have helped me a lot. It may be a good place to start. Good luck, and have a sunny and warm 2018!

  8. Oh My!! I can't wait to look around your blog! I grew up on a little farm. We never had less than like 20 animals growing up. And they were all my responsibility as a kid. We had goats, mini horses, rabbits, chickens, ducks, dogs, cat, some pigs, guinea pigs... It was a lot of work, but I miss it. Now being an adult in an apartment, I have to narrow myself to one pet. So I have a dog, Ryder. When I own property, I will be adding to the family for sure. :)

  9. I am excited to be introduced to your blog! It looks wonderful and your photos are lovely! On the HTML thing, I would suggest Lynda. com for paid courses and also check out Code Academy. The last time I checked, it was free and a really terrific source.
